Alibaba hopes to break 'Singles' Day' sales record

  • Alibaba, the online retailing giant, sold goods worth $2 billion during the first hour on the ‘Singles’ Day’ annual sale in China, according to media reports.

The Chinese firm is hopeful of breaking the record in this year’s annual event. Executive chairman Jack Ma had quipped last week that the number of goods bought “is going to be scary.”

Singles' Day came into being in the early 1990s in China when it was imagined as a day in which single people would shop for themselves.
