September 1 , 2017
Tensions between the two neighbors - China and Vietnam - escalated to its highest this Thursday over the South China Sea. On Thursday, Vietnam opposed China's announcement of military exercises in the conflicted South China Sea. Territorial conflict over the South China Sea has seen a rise in recent times. Vietnam's growing defense ties with the United States, Japan and India has alarmed China. However, under pressure from Beijing, Vietnam suspended oil drilling in offshore waters that are also claimed by China. As per Le Thi Thu Hang, the spokeswoman for Foreign Ministry, “Vietnam proposes China to cease and refrain from repeating acts that complicate the situation in the East Sea.” She further added that all the activities in the Vietnamese waters must comply with Vietnamese and International laws.
