US ambassador to South Korea injured in knife attack

  • Mark Lippert, the American ambassador to South Korea, has been injured in a knife attack in capital Seoul.

The 42-year-old Lippert was participating in a breakfast meeting when a man, believed to be a supporter of Korean unification, slashed the ambassador’s hand and face. A bleeding Lippert was quickly taken to hospital.

His injuries have been described as not life threatening.

The 55-year-old assailant had on a previous occasion thrown a slab at the Japanese ambassador.

The US State Department has strongly condemned “this act of violence”.

US and South Korean forces are currently holding joint military exercises.
