Teenager Stephens Beats Serena Williams

  • The Rod Laver Arena threw up an unexpected surprise when 19 year-old, 29th seeded Sloane Stephens upset third seeded Serena Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to win the quarter-finals. Williams is a 15-time Grand Slam singles champion and this is her 35th Grand Slam quarter-final. Stephens fine-tuned her offence and defense to befuddle Williams who was already plagued by a back problem. Apart from being Fed Cup teammates last year, Williams has long been Stephens’ idol.  Both of them play for the US.
