Serena Williams slams 'sexist and racist' remarks by Tarpischev
October 20 , 2014
World number one Serena Williams has hit out against Russia’s tennis chief Shamil Tarpischev’s “very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist” comments about her and her sister, media reports say.
Tarpischev, who called Serena and Venus the two “Williams brothers” during a TV chat show, was banned for a year by the WTA and fined $25,000. He later issued a public apology.
Serena said the comments were a form of “bullying” and praised the WTA and US Tennis Association for standing up for her.
