The total land area of Illinois is 55,645 square miles and the inland water area of the state is 700 square miles. Situated at an altitude of 1,235 feet, Charles Mound is the highest point of the State of Illinois. Charles Mound is located in the northwestern part of Illinois. The lowest point of the state lies at the southern end of Illinois beside River Mississippi at 279 feet. Ohio River, Mississippi River, Wabash River and Illinois River flow through the State of Illinois. Illinois has several natural and man made lakes. River Wabash and River Ohio flow in the south and southeastern part of Illinois. River Mississippi flows through the western part of the state. Lake Carlyle is the biggest water body of the inland water systems of the state. Rend Lake and Lake Michigan are the other prominent lakes of Illinois. A huge portion of Illinois comes under the watershed area of River Mississippi, while a small part of Illinois falls under the watershed area of St. Lawrence.
