Computer Operating Systems

Computer operating systems are the main driving force behind all computer systems. An operating system is basically a set of application programming that coordinates between the hardware and software packages of a computer. Computer operating systems are used in all types of computer related operations.

History of Computer Operating Systems

Origin of computer dates back to 1940's. However at that time operating systems were not in use. The computer systems of 1950's came with the earliest form of operating system. It was the time when batch processing system was used for the first time. Simultaneous peripheral operations online were applied on in 1960's. Modern operating system started its journey in 1970's. MS-DOS, Intel 8088 CPU and UNIX are some of the operating systems that dominate the field of personal computers in today's world.

Disk operating system is the most basic form of operating systems. Commonly known as DOS, the disk operating system is specially designed to provide support to secondary devices of computer system. Disk operating system establishes an operational link between the users and outside devices of computer system. FreeDOS, DOS/360 are the examples of disk operating systems, which control the overall operating system of modern computers. Disk operating system converts the user's commands into a version readable by computers. At the same time it transforms the error messages generated by computers into a readily understandable format.
