RFK Stadium or the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium , formerly known as the D.C.Stadium , has been playing host to a number of important sporting events of the United States since its opening on 1 st October, 1961. The stadium, owned by the District of Columbia , needed U.S.$20 million for its construction and was a joint venture of architect George A. Dahl and Osborn Engineering . The stadium provides the spectators with a number of amenities like the ATM facilities, Baby Changing facilities, First Aid services, Food shops and others.
The RFK Stadium has been the home ground of a number of teams over the years. Presently, tenants of the stadium are the Washington Nationals and the DC United . This nearly circular stadium can accommodate 45,596 people during the baseball matches while 56,692 spectators can experience soccer and football matches here. The stadium has hosted several baseball matches and many soccer matches were held here during the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 2003 Women's World Cup . The first baseball game in the RFK Stadium was held in 1962 and the stadium is the fourth oldest major league ballpark . The stadium will be demolished after the baseball game of September 23, 2007 as the Washington Nationals and the DC United will be moving into their own new stadiums.
