Fly540 History
The Kenyan carrier started operating on 24th November 2006 and flew within Nairobi and Mombasa. It initiated proceedings with ATR 42 planes that could accommodate 48 passengers at a time. 2 flights were available every day. It got its name from its fares for return flights between its earliest destinations.
One of the major investors in the aviation enterprise was Lonrho Africa, which put in $ 1.5 million and acquired 49% shares of the company. During May 2007 it acquired a couple of de Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 planes that were meant to increase its capacity. This also allowed it to add to its existing destinations.
In 2008 it ferried almost 171,160 passengers that was 93% more than the previous year when 88,571 people availed the airline. Kisumu was added to the list of destinations in January 2007. The next month Malindi and Lamu were added to the list.
The airline started to venture out of Kenya in October 2007. The South Sudanese city of Juba was the first destination along with Goma in Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Ugandan city of Entebbe became part of the list in February 2008.
An expansion to Rwanda, Burundi and Mozambique was planned in 2009. The company was looking to spread its wings throughout Africa by adding Ghana and Angola to its sphere of operations.
During April that year it was officially permitted to provide flights to Angola. At the first phase they looked to provide flights to Cabinda, Benguela, Luanda, Huambo, Soyo and Malanje. However, these plans are yet to reach fruition as their potential is being tested. It was also reported during June 2009 that Fly540 was looking to start operations in Zimbabwe.
