Hurricane Katrina's Path of Destruction

(02nd September, 2005)

Many people are feared dead after Hurricane Katrina pummelled swathes of the southern coast of the US, causing extensive damage.

In Grand Isle 1,200 people was among the first to feel the fury of Hurricane Katrina as the category four storm, with winds of 145mph (233 km/h), swept ashore.

Police chiefs managed to evacuate almost everyone. No deaths have been reported. But many of the town's homes were swept off their stilts. Now hundreds are without power and unable to return home.

In New Orleans Shootings, carjacking and thefts are reported across the city where the mayor has ordered everyone to be evacuated and has instructed police to crack down on looters. Rescuers continue to ignore the floating bodies of the dead to rescue the living, some of whom have gone for more than two days with very little to eat.

In Biloxi the powerful winds swept floating casino barges onto the shore Biloxi, a resort town of 50,000 people, was particularly badly hit by the storm, which brought a 30ft (9m) surge of floodwater.

Many of the deaths in Mississippi - said to be ast least 110 - are thought to have occurred in Biloxi. Much of Louisiana's old capital was damaged as the water washed ashore, sweeping through the seafront casinos that represented the mainstay of the city's economy. At least 12 vast gambling halls built above river barges have been disembowelled and two were forced onto land.

In the town centre, road are blocked and streets are littered with debris, cars sitting on top of remains of houses.

In Gulfport, as Katrina battered coastlines with 135mph (217 km/h) winds, she tossed many of the city's casino barges onto the shore.

More than half of the 13 casinos in the town and nearby Biloxi and Bay St Louis were destroyed. About 14,000 people work in the casinos along the Mississippi coastline.

In Bay St Louis, a 22ft (6.7 m) storm surge came ashore. It rolled more than a mile (1.6 km) inland in parts of the state.

In Mobile some emergency food supplies have already arrived Two deaths have been reported in the Alabama port city. Flooding reached 3.3 metres (11 feet) in places.

Residents have been queuing for supplies at emergency aid centres and 325,000 homes and businesses are without power. Food, ice and water are being handed out.
