Stratus clouds


A stratus cloud typifies a unique kind of cloud formation identified by its horizontal layering. Stratus clouds are usually taller in its appearance and are set along a uniform base. Stratus is usually meant to describe flat, featureless clouds belonging to low altitude. Stratus clouds can be seen in different shades of color starting from dark gray to plain white.

Stratus clouds are generally foggy in nature which lies above the ground level and is created by either morning fog or usually when cold air shifts at low altitudes. These clouds don’t accompany precipitation but usually bring along a huge amount of fog, drizzle or mist with it.

Stratus formations which bring along precipitation with it are recognized as nimbostratus. Altostratus and cirrostratus are known as a part of the Stratus cloud formations which usually occur in higher altitudes.







Altostratus is a cloud which can be seen with a gray colored sheet which can usually be seen at an altitude ranging from 6,500-20,000 feet. Cirrostratus clouds are usually made of ice crystals which envelops the entire sky.





Stratus cloud formations can be witnessed somewhere below 2,000 m of altitude. Stratus clouds are usually known as low clouds which brings along rain and snow with it. Stratus clouds are usually created when the warm moist air comes in union with cold and dry air. Rain and drizzle are a part of Stratus cloud formations which occurs with due course of time.
