Kingfisher Red History
Deccan Aviation used to run Air Deccan, which is the predecessor of the Mumbai based airline and Captain GR Gopinath was the founder. The earliest flight was on August 23, 2003 and it flew between Hyderabad and Vijaywada.
It was regarded as an airline for common men and its logo showed two palms that were joined together and gave the impression of flight. Its tagline was "Simpli-fly" and it looked to empower the common man.
Captain Gopinath had envisioned that his airline would allow every Indian to fly at least once in their lives. It was also the earliest airline to have flown to less known cities such as Hubbali, Madurai, Mangalore, and Vishakhapatnam.
The company decided to venture into the stock market with a red herring prospectus on January 25, 2006. Its first IPO was 25% and it became operative on May 18, 2006. However, it was unable to generate much interest due to financial downturn and prices of its shares.
On 27th February 2007 it started the reservation system provided by US based Radixx International and was preceded by GoAir in India. It had previously used InterGlobe Technologies that was based in Delhi.
Several critical problems such as inadequate growth and too intense competition meant that Air Deccan suffered severe losses that led it to merge with Kingfisher Airlines. However, owing to rules of Indian aviation Kingfisher was merged with Deccan Aviation in April 2008. Captain Gopinath assumed the post of Vice Chairman while Vijay Mallya took over as the CEO cum Chairman.
