Established in 1919, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is currently headed by the parent company 'Air France -KLM'.
The Frequent Flier Program of KLM Airlines bears the sobriquet of 'Flying Blue'.
Flying Blue provides unique facilities in each of its four stages of membership, namely, Ivory, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The hues on the Flying Blue membership cards depict the stage a member is in. The stage of membership is based on the number of miles a passenger has earned. Each stage provides facilities that not only cover the privileges of the lower stages but also comprise additional facilities that are valid from that stage onwards. Passengers may climb the rungs of the Flying Blue ladder by simply traveling extra miles. The miles are allotted to the passengers in the manner described below:
Passengers are awarded with one Award Mile and one Level Mile for the distance traversed in KLM Airlines, Air France or other airlines that have mile collaborations with KLM Airlines. The maximum number of miles that may be assigned to any passenger varies with the distance traversed by that particular flight and the class in which the passenger chooses to travel. There are 500 Award and Level Miles available on domestic flights and 750 Award and Level Miles available on international flights.
Members of the different levels of Flying Blue may broadly avail of the following kinds of facilities:
- Preference on waiting lists
- Preference while checking-in
- Unique booking facilities
- Definite seat allotments within a week's intimation
- Permission to carry additional luggage
Facilities increase and are enhanced in quality as passengers move to higher levels in Flying Blue.
