Today the economies around the world are witnessing increasing interdependence due to growing movement of services, capital, technologies and goods. The economic globalization is the result of advancement in technologies as now there is a flow of information across borders. Foreign companies are also investing in economies around the world. An advantage of a nation’s integration into the global economy is a rise in the standards of living.

To access the extent of globalization among nations, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich publishes an annual report, KOF Index of Globalization. The index comprises three dimensions – economic, social and political. The index measures globalization on a scale of 1 to 100. In the economic globalization sub-index, Singapore tops the list with a score of 97.77. The second most economically globalized nation is Ireland which has a score of 94.65, while at the third spot is Luxembourg with a score of 94.06. Other countries that had scored more than 90 included the Netherlands, Malta, and Belgium.

Some of the nations which had scores between 75 and 90 were the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and other nations. Among the BRICS nations, South Africa was the most economically globalized nation with a score of 68.91.

Nations which were the least economically globalized and had scores of less than 45 were Zimbabwe, Pakistan , Central African Republic, Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, India and other nations. Meanwhile, ranked right at the bottom was Nepal, which had a score of 24.72.
