Although flag of Germany was adopted as a federal flag, it was put to civil use on 14 August, 1950. The tricolor consisting of the colors red, yellow and black is also used as the merchant ensign.
The naval ensign is also not very different from the flags of Germany with just the naval flag being swallow-tailed. Before being given official status, the German tricolor was also used earlier in German history in 1848 but eventually discarded in 1852 and further re-adopted in 1919 as the flag of the Weimar Republic.
The original tricolor flag of Germany had added to its structure a coat of arms from 1959 to 1989.
The colors on the flag of German depict the liberal nationalism in Germany and not republicanism as is thought by most people.
