Niedersachsen is a German state located in the northwestern part of the country. Mainly known as Lower Saxony, it is the second largest state in Germany in terms of area and the fourth largest by population. Stretching over an area of 18,388 square miles, Lower Saxony has the largest number of neighbors. The states that share their border with Lower Saxony are: Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. The state also borders the North Sea and Netherlands. Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony and some other prominent cities located in the state include Brunswick, Oldenburg, Wolfsburg, Gottingen, Luneburg, among others. The Altes Land, which are the banks located south of Elbe, is known for its favorable climate and fertile soil which make it an apt region for fruit farming. Apples are the main fruits produced in the region.
The only state in the country that comprises both mountainous as well as maritime areas, Lower Saxony is a fabulous tourist destination. Some places that one might like to visit include the Autostadt, a principal attraction emphasizing on automobiles; Erlebnis Zoo Hannover; Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, Deutsches Panzermuseum (The German Tank Museum) and many other attractions.
Lower Saxony has a well developed air, rail and road infrastructure. The state is well-connected by air as the international airport is located in Lower Saxony's capital, Hanover. The other prominent airports located in the neighboring states include Hamburg, Bremen, and Münster/Osnabrück.
