The US Virgin Islands are an archipelago comprising of some 3 big islands - St. Croix , St. Thomas and St. John - and 75 small ones.

It is a protectorate of the USA. It was awarded its name by Columbus after the followers of St. Ursula.

Location of Virgin Islands :
Located in the Caribbean region, with Puerto Rico to the west, the Virgin Islands lie between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. It is not too far from the USA mainland.

Physical Map of Virgin Islands :
Virgin Islands are a place where the mountains and seas coexist. Plain land almost does not exist. The hills are relatively rugged. The one serious downside of the islands is the fact that they lack natural freshwater resources. The harbor in St. Thomas possesses a natural deepwater harbor.

Virgin Islands Flag

Flag of Virgin Islands :
The flag of the Virgin Islands is relatively simple in design, while mingling aspects of the US flag with its own individual identity. It comprises of a stark white backdrop on which is a yellow bald eagle - which is the official coat of arms of the US and also its national bird. A shield with a blue panel and on top and red and white stripes below lies on the body of the eagle. The left talon of the eagle is shown as clutching an olive branch, while the right is shown to be holding three arrows. On either side of the eagle appear the initials of the Virgin Islands - 'V' and 'I' - in blue.

Climate of Virgin Islands :
Virgin Islands boast of subtropical climatic conditions. However, moderation comes in the guise of the easterly trade winds. As a result of this, humidity is considerably low. Even, variations in the seasons are not drastic but temperate. The rainy season is probably the only one that is noticeable of the lot, stretching from September to November.

Flora and Fauna of Virgin Islands :
The flora of the islands of Virgin Islands comprises of various types of fruit, vegetables and sorghum. The animal and avian are more diverse. Animals on the island are iguanas, mongooses, donkeys, deer and goats. There are plenty of birds to be found too; they are: pelicans, hummingbirds, herons, Sea Gull, Bananaquits, Egrets and Doves. Bats, lizards, frogs and Hermit Crabs are the other things to be found in abundance on the islands.

People of Virgin Islands :
The original inhabitants of the islands are the people of the Awarak Indian and the Carib Indian races. However, the subsequent chequered history of the islands led to the arrival of people of several other races and cultures. So, now along with the original Indians, dark-skinned, white, Asians, West Indian, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and mixed races and others are also to be found.

Arts, Culture and Music of Virgin Islands :
Initially inhabited by Indians of the Arawak and Carib races, the Virgin Islands now comprise of a diverse and multicultural population. The traditional music of the islands is called the "Quelbe" which is sung with the aid of a musical instrument called 'scratch bands'. Folk music is also popular in the islands.

Economy of Virgin Islands :
Most of the revenues in the islands are obtained from the tourism industry and those other subsidiary organizations associated with it. However, there are other things that keep the cash registers in the Virgin Islands ringing. These other contributors to the economy are refining of petroleum, textiles, electronic goods, medicines, watch assembling, rum distilling and materials used for construction.
