California is the third largest state in the United States, covering a total area of 163,696 square miles (423,970 square kilometers).
Bordered by Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona on the north, east and southeast, California's western border is formed by the Pacific Ocean, giving it a coastline that is 840 miles (1,350 kilometers) long, the third longest in the country.
