The State of Georgia is divided into 159 counties. Every county is governed by the respective county seat. There are four consolidated city counties. Barrow County, Bartow County, and Murray County are some of the major counties in Georgia.




About Georgia Counties

Georgia is a beautiful southeastern state of the US. Established in the year 1732, Georgia, the eighth most populous and twenty-fourth largest state of the US, was named after the King George II of the Great Britain. The state Georgia is also referred to as “Peach State” as a result of manufacturing the very best quality of Peach in the state.

Surrounded by Florida in south, South Carolina and Atlantic Ocean on the east, Alabama on the west, and North Carolina and Tennessee on the north, Georgia is home to the splendid Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a part of the Appalachian Mountain system.

Georgia Prominent Counties

Georgia is further segregated into 159 counties each of which is administered by their respective county seats. Some of the prominent counties are Barrow County, Decatur County, Bartow County, Murray County, Cook County, Fulton County, Wilcox County, and Lamar County among others.

Bartow County

The Bartow County, which was formerly known as Cass County, covers an area of 470 sq. miles and was founded in December 1832. With several historical sites to boast of, Bartow County with the county seat of Cartersville, houses Lake Allatoona, Red Top Mountain State Park, Friendship Monument, and Euharlee Covered Bridge.

Barrow County

Another prominent County in the state is the Barrow County, which is spread over an area of 163 sq. miles. The county was formed in July 1914. Top attractions in the County are the Barrow County Courthouse and Chateau Elan. A relatively new courthouse of the county is situated in Winder, the county seat of Barrow, and also the hometown of the famous US Senator Mr. Richard B. Russell, Jr.

Franklin County

The Franklin County was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin. The county seat of the Franklin is Carnesville and the largest city is Lavonia. Mount Grace, Historic Deerfield, Northfield Mountain, Mount Toby, Erving State Forest, and Lake Wyola are the major attractions of the county.

Decatur County

Decatur, covering an area of 623 sq. miles and founded in 1823, is famous for the Lake Seminole and the City Hall and Firehouse. City Hall is located in the city of Bainbridge, which is also the county seat of Decatur. Now known as the Firehouse Center, the City Hall is a historic fire station and city hall building, which was constructed in the year 1914. It is one of the significant ‘contributing properties’ of the Decatur county. The Lake Seminole is a reservoir in the county and shares borders with the state of Florida.

Fulton County

Fulton County, the premier county of the Atlanta metropolitan area, is one of the main counties of the state and was formed in 1853. The County seat of Fulton is Atlanta, which is the capital of the State of Georgia and also the most populous city of the state too. However, a small portion of the city, i.e. 10% of the city also extends into the County of DeKalb. Atlanta is the ‘world-city.’ Atlanta is ranked at the 15th place among the world cities for its economy and at sixth in its own country.

Atlanta boasts of an amazing landscape, splendid cityscape, great museums, and entertainment complexes among many other things. One most famous attraction in the county is the Georgia Aquarium located in Atlanta. It is the world’s largest aquarium which houses more than 100,000 animals, who live in 38,000 cubic meters of fresh and marine water. Each year the aquarium attracts thousands of people from all across the world.

A place next door to the aquarium is the Coca-Cola museum. Atlanta is the place of origin of the soft drink giant Coca-Cola.

Near Atlanta is the Stone Mountain Park, which is surrounded by the grand granite rock, which is visible from countless areas of the city. One can take a tram or hike to the mountain top and pay a visit to the old homes and various other areas at the park in the day and during the night one can enjoy the dazzling laser show on the mountainside.

Murray County

Comprising of a total area of just 347 sq. miles, it was formed in 1832. Its county seat is Chatsworth. Murray County offers Chief Vann House, Fort Mountain State Park, and Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest as its major attractions.

Colleges and Universities

There are many top-grade colleges and universities present in Georgia. University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, and Morehouse College are few of the notable institutions of the state.
