Wilmington is a city in the U.S state of Delaware. Named by Proprietor Thomas Penn for his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, the first settlement was seen in 1638. Then the Dutch took over the colonies in 1655. Later in 1664, British colonization began and the city began to grow steadily during the Civil War. It is now the largest city in the state and the county seat of New Castle County. Wilmington is also one of the major cities in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area.
