The bidding process for the selection of the host city for 2020 Summer Olympics began on May 23, 2012, at the IOC Session held in Quebec City, Canada.

Initially, six cities had applied for hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics, out of which Rome withdrew shortly.

Of the remaining five cities, the application of Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar) were not selected leaving three cities Istanbul (Turkey), Madrid (Spain) and Tokyo (Japan) as the official candidate cities for 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

On September 7, 2013, the IOC voted to select the 2020 Summer Olympics host city at the 25th IOC Session in the Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires.

The final vote witnessed a contest between Tokyo and Istanbul. Tokyo was finally selected as the host city by 60 votes to 36.

The 2020 Summer Olympics are planned to be held from July 24, 2020 to August 9, 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. The event is expected to see a participation of 222 nations.
