The Sixteenth Olympiad: The 1956 Summer Games were officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad . The Games were held in Melbourne, the state capital of the Australian State of Victoria in the year 1956 . The equestrian events were held in Stockholm, Sweden

Participants: 3184 participants competed in the sixteenth Olympiad. The 67 countries which took part in the Games were Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, British Guiana, Bulgaria, Burma, Canada, Ceylon, Chile, Republic of China, Colombia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Liberia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, North Borneo, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand, Trinidad, Turkey, Uganda, U.S.S.R., U.S.A., Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yugoslavia.

Events: In the sixteenth Olympiad there were 145 events in 17 sports. The sports included in the program were athletics, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, modern pentathlon, rowing, shooting, swimming, water polo, weightlifting, wrestling and yachting.

Medal Count: U.S.S.R. was at the top of the chart with a total of 98 medals ( 37 gold, 29 silver and 32 bronze) . United States won 74 medals with 32 gold . Australia, the host country won 35 medals in total with 13 gold medals.

A Brief Description of the Sixteenth Olympiad: The Sixteenth Summer Games were held from 22 nd November to 8 th December in Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria. The Games were officially opened by Duke of Edinburgh. The athletes uttered Olympic oath led by John Landy. The Olympic Flame was lit by Ron Clark. For the first time, events of the same Summer Games were held in different countries. Equestrian Games were held in Stockholm in Sweden. There the games were held from 10 th June to 17 th June. The games were officially opened by Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden. There the athletes Uttered Olympic oath under Henri Saint Cyr and the Olympic Flame was lit by Hans Wikne.
