Career: Jan Zelezny's first international appearance was in the 1987 European Championships, where he won bronze medal in the javelin throw event. In the 1988 Seoul Summer Games . He was already holding the world record in the javelin throwing before the 1988 Games. In the Games, he won one silver medal in the javelin throwing competition. In the next four years, Zelezny could not do well in the sport. In his next appearance at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games . This time he won the first Olympic gold medal of his career. Zelezny won the World Championships title thrice in 1993, 1995 and 2001. In the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games , Zelezny successfully defended his Olympic title in the javelin throw event. In 1996, Zelezny threw javelin at the distance of 98.48 meter. With this distance, he set world record in the event. In the 2000 Sydney Summer Games , he set a new Olympic record in the event and won his third Olympic gold medal. This time his throw covered a distance of 90.17 meter. In his last appearance at the 2004 Athens Summer Games, Zelezny finished in ninth place in the javelin throwing competition. In the 2006 European Championships, he won bronze medal in the competition. After the 2006 Championships, Zelezny retired from the sport.

Performance at the Olympics: Jan Zelezny participated at the first Olympics of his career in 1988. In the 1988 Seoul Summer Games , he won silver medal in the javelin throwing competition losing to Tapio Korjus of Finland only by 16 centimeter. In the qualifying round, he set a new Olympic record in the event. In the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games , Zelezny improved his own Olympic record by 3.76 meter and won his first Olympic title in the event. In the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games , Zelezny successfully defended his Olympic title defeating Steve Backley of Great Britain. In his next appearance at the 2000 Sydney Summer Games , he won his third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event. Setting a new Olympic record, he once again beat Steve Backley. In the 2004 Athens Summer Games, Zelezny participated for the last time in his career finishing ninth in the competition.
