French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France. The flag of the territory comprises two red horizontal bands (top and bottom) with a white band in the middle.

In the middle of the white stripe is the national coat of arms that features a circular disk. The disk consists of blue and white waves in the lower half while the upper half depicts a gold and white ray pattern with the sun. On the waves, a canoe with a five-member crew is cruising. These five stars represent the five island groups: the Marquesas Islands, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Tuamotu-Gambier, and the Austral Islands.

Red and white are traditional Polynesian colors. The golden rays of the sun against which the canoe sails, are a symbol of life. The five rows of waves stand for the abundance of water in the region.

The flag of French Polynesia was formally approved on November 23, 1984, by the Assembly of French Polynesia. As French Polynesia is a territory of France, the French Constitution makes it mandatory that the national flag of the territory be flown with the French Tricolor.
