The city has a historical relevance. During the ancient period, the city occupied a powerful position in Egypt. The rulers of the city were later overthrown by the Thebian kings. Because of the chaos and destructions that took place, a number of buildings and monuments have been found in dilapidated conditions. These ancient ruins are scattered over an area of 165 acres. The Herishef temple, which was artistically built by Ramesses II, is now completely ruined with scattered blocks left over.
