Nauru culture consists of the traditions and custom of the native people of the island. The ethnic groups of Nauru have original art, craft, dance and music forms that form a part of Nauru Culture. The small island was a huge reserve of phosphate and this lured the countries like Britain, Germany, Australia to occupy the island. The ancient beliefs and customs are still prevalent among the native people of Nauru. One of the beliefs is regarding their origin from a female deity as well as the existence of a land, Buitani. The language spoken by majority of the people is Nauruan, which is also the official language of the island. English is also another commonly used language among the people. The use of English gained importance mainly as a language of communication between the natives and the Europeans. The religion practiced by the people is mainly Christianity. Festivals concentrate on Christian religious celebrations like Christmas, Easter, etc. Other celebrations include Independence Day, Angam Day, etc. The popular sports are American Rules Football, softball, weightlifting, etc.
