The
history of Iceland dates back to the 8th century when it was founded a habitable place by the
Irish monks. The 9th century witnessed the arrival of the pagan
Norse-the Vikings who replaced the Irish hermits. A constitution,
Althing, was drawn up providing Iceland with its democratic status.
During the period 1262-64, Iceland was taken over by Norway. The turbulent and bloody period under the
Norweigian rule made a significant mark in the history of Iceland. But it was'nt long when the country along with Norway fell into the
Danish hands. By end of 14th century the Danes had taken over the reins through unification of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway (
Kalmar union).
The Icelanders adopted christianity in 1000 A.D. Iceland history shows that the first literary expression was in the form of poetry which was heroic in its theme. This was later replaced by epics and dramatic tales covering romance, heroic deeds and legends.
Looking back at Iceland history one can see that by end of 18th century Althing got dissolved and by 1874 Denmark lost its hold on the country. In 1874 Iceland got its own
constitution and in 1918 Denmark recognised Iceland as a separate
sovereign state through the
Act of Union. But nominally Iceland remained under the Danish monarchy.
During the Second World War the Nazis occupied Denmark and then the British and American troops used it for a strategic airbase. Though oficially neutral, Iceland was inclined to the Allies. On June 17th ,1944 Iceland became an
independent republic.
Iceland is one of the
greatest countries of the world with a rich and intriguing history.
