During 1800, the city was reined by the Muslim rulers. A battle between Germen forces and Emirate of Yola resulted in German occupation of the country. Again in 1915, the city was occupied by the French. Since it was the birthplace of the Cameroon president, the city had been benefited by many ways.
The climate of the city is moderate with 70Celsius in winter and 90 Celsius in the summer months.
Garoua houses many modern buildings, training schools for rangers, banks colorful markets and factories. The city mainly consists of nomadic herders among which Fulani occupies the highest position. The city serves as a hub for Fulani Chiefdom.From the north of this town emerge the Mandara Mountain which is the home town of the Kirdi people.
The city also serves as a river port and is famous for the greeneries surrounding the metropolis. The main tourist attractions located nearby the city include:
