The growth and development of Burundi Flora and Fauna depends on the location and the climate of the country. However, the flora of Burundi has undergone huge exploitation throughout the past and consequentially the fauna of Burundi has also been affected. Savanna grasslands cover most parts of Burundi.
The trees thriving in Burundi concentrate in the regions surrounding the lakes. The commonly observed trees of Burundi include the eucalyptus, fig, acacia and oil palms. The flora of Burundi has been destroyed because of mass deforestation in the past to increase the agricultural land area. Forest cover is almost non-existent in Burundi.
Burundi flora and fauna are interdependent. The deforestation in Burundi has led to the loss of habitat of many species of animals and birds of Burundi. The wild animals found in Burundi include elephants, lions, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, wild boars, flying lemur, antelope, etc. The birds of Burundi like partridge, duck, quail, geese, guinea fowl, snipe and others also form parts of Burundi fauna.
The fish found in Lake Tanganyika consists of various endemic species. The waters of the lake provide shelter to a number of fishes like freshwater sardines and Nile perch. Almost 133 species of fish are found in Lake Tanganyika. They also form parts of the fauna of Burundi.
