Hurricane Michael slams Florida, marking as the strongest storm of the year

As death toll climbs, devastation is still being assessed
October 15, 2018
With rescue operations being carried out, the hard-hit areas of Virginia, Georgia and Mexico Beach, Florida have reported a death toll of 19 people. Three days after the monstrous storm struck the states, sustaining winds at 155 mph, the death reports have only been surging.

Secondary searches and thorough rescue operations are in progress, in-between the ruins of the houses. The houses have uprooted, with only the foundations remaining behind. As of Saturday afternoon, an estimated 709,750 people were without power supply, in almost six states, the highest reported in North Carolina. Amongst the downed trees and power lines that were compromised in the storm, people have been left homeless, with instances of entire neighbourhoods being destroyed.

Calling off the campaign trail until next Wednesday, Democratic candidate for Governor and Tallahassee Mayor, Andrew Gillum, stated he could not leave town, where thousands of residents are deprived of electricity. Hence, the first scheduled debate between him and his Republican challenger, Ron DeSantis, was cancelled.

The situation in Panama city reflected people in dire conditions. The National Guard handed them basic supplies and were seen making the best out of bad situation by throwing open their front yards into kitchens for cooking.

The Governor Rick Scott paid a visit to the affected areas, while President Donald Trump is pronounced to visit both Florida and Georgia, in the coming week.
Search and rescue operations initiated amidst wreckage in Florida

With rows of houses shattered down to pieces in Florida, the hurricane-weary parts of North and South Carolina and Virginia were met with flash flooding. The tropical storm Michael's shift towards the Atlantic Ocean early Friday left region in complete devastation. The blame of the death by the Hurricane, has now increased to six people, as search and rescue operations are being carried out.

Some of the worst damage was reported in Mexico Beach, Florida, where the Hurricane crashed ashore on Wednesday, as a Category 4 storm, sustaining winds of 155mph, and a reported storm surge of 9 feet. As of Thursday, 900,000 homes and businesses in the Southeast were deprived of electricity. Associated tornadoes and heavy downpours are forecasted, as Michael hit North and South Carolina, in the form of a tropical storm.

Communities across Florida panhandle are left unrecognisable, with trees snapped in half and homes detached from their foundations. The National Weather Service (NWS), called the situation “particularly dangerous” due to the aftermath of flooding.

Traversing at 25 mph, with maximum winds of 50mph, Michael is poised to move off the Virginia coast, but is still creating damaging winds and life-threatening flooding conditions. Emergency managers have reported road closures, as they are pummelled with over 6 inches of rain and accumulated standing water. Losing its tropical storm characteristics, Michael is expected to race East-Northeastward across the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane Michael leaves a record-breaking trail of devastation
October 11, 2018
Striking states with powerful rains, winds and flooding, Hurricane Michael, recorded as the strongest hurricane to hit the United States. Making landfall on Wednesday, it continued to charge north pummelling the Southeast states. Darkness clocked the full spread of the damage and prompted emergencies as it moved across the region. It weakened over land and thus became a tropical storm late into Wednesday.

Two fatalities have been reported in association with the storm, including an 11-year old child. The first death was due to a debris-related incident. The National Hurricane Centre has described the storm as 'potentially catastrophic', packed with maximum sustained winds.

After crushing the Florida coast, Michael continues to weaken over Central Georgia. The eye of the hurricane moves across Southern Georgia overnight Wednesday into Thursday, sustaining winds of 75 mph. The weather services have discontinued hurricane associated warning for Florida Panhandle, as well as stopped storm surge warnings West of Panama City and Southeast of Keaton Beach. Nonetheless, heavy rainfall is expected to pour down on Georgia through the morning hours, with possible flash flooding.

Michael is forecasted to steadily drop through Thursday night into a category-1 tropical storm by Thursday morning. But is also expected to strengthen Friday night, while moving off the East Coast of the United States, turning into a post-tropical cyclone.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, held a brief meeting to charge the officials for 100% focused search and rescue operations. He additionally directed the people to stay indoors until further notices are issued, so the rescue teams to mobilise quickly. President Donald Trump, has planned on paying visits to the affected areas, later in the week.

Packing sustained winds of 120 mph, Hurricane Michael has strengthened into a category 3 storm. Estimated to grow stronger, it seethes into the Gulf of Mexico and aims at Florida Panhandle, onTuesday. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts Michael to have the potential of bringing a 13 feet storm surge, between Mexico Beach and Keaton Beach.

Deriving energy from the Gulf waters with temperature at mid-80s, the storm is said to intensify to a Category 4, before making an expected landfall midday-Wednesday. If the storm escalates, it would mark as the strongest in terms of wind speed, to make landfall in the country, this year. The Florida Government, calling the storm as “monstrous”, urged people in the ill-equipped low lying areas to evacuate, as it poses a life-threatening situation. 22 counties on the Florida Gulf Coast will experience winds of tropical storm force, and have been issued to evacuate mandatorily. Additionally, warnings cover a total of 8.5 million people in four states including the Panhandle and Big Bend regions, as well as parts of Southeastern Alabama and Southern Georgia.

The Hurricane can also be possibly accompanied with tornadoes into Southeast, on Wednesday into Thursday.

President Donald Trump approved a federal pre-landfall emergency declaration and activated 2,500 National Guardsmen. Several hospitals have been shut ahead of the storm, but have kept the emergency room open. Fishing docks have been emptied in preparation for the storm to hit the land and shelter homes have been thrown open to the people. The Federal Aviation Administration has asked the travellers to closely monitor the airlines for status updates. The fast pacing hurricane Michael is mainly associated with winds and storm surge, but is capable of a potential rainfall. People are advised to not let their guards down.
