Uganda Elections



The Uganda Elections are responsible for the appointment of the president and also the members of the legislature. After independence in 1962 there was no general election in Uganda as the power shifted to the hands of a dictator. The first election took place in 1980 and the latest election was on February 2006. The Ugandan election for the president takes place every five years. There are in total 292 members in the country's legislature but there are 214 number of constituencies where election in held. The turbulent and complicated politics of Uganda is very well reflected in the elections. There are a number of constituencies which are which are especially meant for women representatives to the parliament.

There are a number of political parties in Uganda which participate in the general elections. Some of the parties are Justice Forum, Forum for Democratic Change, Democratic Party, National Resistance Movement, Conservative party and Uganda People's Congress. In the latest election which was held in the year 2006 National Resistance Movement got the maximum number of votes and gained majority. Yoweri Museveni the nominated presidential candidate of the party for the election came to power due to this landslide mandate. The last election in Uganda took place five years ago in 2001. According to some of the critics the election held in 2006 was the first election in 26 years where there was a multi party contest. The irregularity which takes place in the election of Uganda is highly criticized in the international arena.
