Ilulissat according to the local language is interpreted as the town of icebergs. Ilulissat became significant when Ice fjord was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004. The icebergs in Ice fjord are contributed by one of the important glaciers of the world called the Sermeq Kujalleq.

The most important spot that attracts the tourist’s attention is the Ilimanaq settlement in the south of Ilulissat. It is held as the oldest settlement of Greenland. Another settlement named as the Jakobshavn provides the pleasure of living in a country covered with snow. It has the largest number of sled dogs which are its main source of transport as the snow makes the passage of any other form of transport almost impossible. The midnight sun creates an extravagant web of colors on the Ice Fjord. The Oqaitsut or popularly known as Rodebay presents a scene from the past like the Ilimanaq settlement in its simple life style comprising mostly of hunting and fishing. The Gulf Stream offers excellent scope to watch seals and whales as it restricts the sea from freezing.
Communication in Ilulissat
Kangerlussuaq serves as chief airport of Ilulissat which receives flights from Denmark and allows return flights from Ilulissat on a regular basis. It is the busiest airport of Ilulissat. Helicopters, buses as well as boat trips are available for communication within Ilulissat.
