Archaeology in Bulgaria



Archeology is Bulgaria is noteworthy for several types of golden treasures of the ancient period. Archaeology in Bulgaria include Rogozen Treasure, Golden Mask, Preslav Treasure, Lukovit treasure, etc.

Golden Mask

During 19th August 2004 the golden mask of Thracian King was found out by Georgi Kitov. Georgi Kitov is one of the most renowned archaeologist of Bulgaria. This golden mask was discovered in Central Bulgaria's burying cumulus Svetitsata near Shipka village. The face in the mask has both moustache and beard. The mask is made of 600 gm gold. According to some archaeologists the mask may be of the Thracian king, King Seutus III. King Seutus III reigned in the 5th century BC. Apart from the golden mask the other things which were found include a golden ring, numerous silver and bronze vessels, etc.

Preslav Treasure

During autumn 1977 the Preslav Treasure was detected in Kastana's vineyard, which is situated in Veliki Preslav. The Preslav Treasure was hidden between 969 and 972. Between 969 and 972 Sviatoslav I of Kiev captured Preslav and after 2 years Preslav was again captured by John Tzimisces who was the ruler of Byzantine. The Preslav treasure included jewels of women (necklaces, hair needles, earrings, etc.) as well as various silver Byzantine coins. Among the Preslav Treasure the most precious ones were a necklace of 13 gold plates and a diadem of various gold plates.
