About New Jersey

The US State of New Jersey is the 3rd state in the United States. On December 18, 1787, it was admitted to the Union, and New Jersey achieved statehood. The State of New Jersey’s nickname is “The Garden State.”

New Jersey Flag

On March 26, 1896, the state flag of New Jersey was adopted. It has a bluff background color with a coat of arms at its center. The design of the coat of arms includes:

  • Three plows symbolize agriculture.
  • One of the supporters is the goddess Ceres, who also symbolizes agriculture.
  • Liberty is the other supporter in the coat of arms.
  • A horse’s head is shown on the crest.

New Jersey Geography

The total area of New Jersey is 8,722.58 sq mi (22,591.38 sq km). Out of which 7,354.22 sq mi (19,047.34 sq km) is land area and 1,368.36 sq mi (3,544.04 sq km) is water area. It is one of the smallest US states in terms of size. New Jersey has four major landforms or terrains: Atlantic Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Highlands, and Appalachian Ridge and Valley. 

At 1,803 feet (550 m), High Point is the highest elevation point. The state’s lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level. New Jersey Climate 

You’ll find a diverse climatic conditions in New Jersey, mainly because of the state’s mountainous topography. With the rise in elevation, the average temperature drops, and precipitation increases. 

The average temperature during January varies from the upper 10s °F (around −8 °C) in the central mountains to the low 30s °F (around −1 °C) in the central panhandle. The average temperature during July varies from 60 °F (around 16 °C) in the central mountains to the upper 70s °F (around 25 °C) in the southwest. 

The annual average precipitation level ranges from less than 10 inches (250 mm) in most parts of the Snake River plateau to over 50 inches (1,250 mm) in the Northern Rockies. 

New Jersey History

Traces of the first inhabitants in the New Jersey area date back to 12,000 years ago. The major Native American tribes living here for thousands of years were the Lenape, Unalachtigo, and Munsee. 

The first European who visited the New Jersey area was the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. Dutch, Finnish, and Swedish colonists built settlements and fought with each other to lay claim on this land for over a hundred years. In 1664, the British took control of this place. New Jersey was one of the first thirteen American colonies that England ruled. 

The European colonists who settled here wanted independence, which led to the American Revolution in 1775. George Washington reached New Jersey’s Trenton by crossing the Delaware River and defeated the mighty British forces. The Revolutionary War became one of the significant turning points in favor of the US forces. New Jersey signed the Bill of Rights. In 1787, it attained statehood and became the third state incorporated in the Union.
