 The county government in New Jersey includes a Board of County Commissioners, clerks, sheriff and Surrogate, all of which are elected officials. The Five-digit Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Code of  New Jersey State starts with 34, which is completed by a three-digit county code, written as 34XXX.

History of Counties in New Jersey 

Between 1674 and 1702, the state of New Jersey was governed by two groups as two distinct provinces, West Jersey and East Jersey. The first counties of New Jersey were created as administrative districts within each region. In 1675, East Jersey was divided into Essex, Bergen, Monmouth and Middlesex counties. Whereas the initial counties of west Jersey created in 1681 were Salem and Burlington.


On April 17, 1702, East Jersey and west jersey were united into the single royal Province of New Jersey. After this, the counties of Henderson (1714), Morris (1739), Cumberland (1748), and Sussex (1753) were formed.

On December 18, 1787, the state of New Jersey entered the Union as 3rd state with 13 counties. Between 1824 – 1857, New Jersey added eight more counties, bringing 21. Most of the counties of New Jersey have derived their names from the prominent leaders in the colonial and revolutionary period and after the place names in England.

Burlington County is the largest county in New Jersey, covering an area of 805 square miles (2,080 km2). The smallest county in New Jersey is Hudson County, covering an area of 47 square miles (120 km2).

Some of the best counties to live in the New Jersey State of United States are Somerset County, Morris County, Middlesex County, Bergen County and Mercer County.


Most populated and least populated county of New Jersey

Bergen County is the most populated county (2020 census) in New Jersey, and Salem County is the least populated county (2020 census) in New Jersey state of the United States.
