Keeping the ideal of complete literacy in mind, the administration of the Texas Government decided to form a governing body called the Texas Education Agency. The responsibility of the Texas Education Agency is to administer the educational policies of the different educational institutions and work on their development, if necessary.
Under the
No Child Left Behind or the NCLB Act in Texas, the Texas Education Agency has taken the onus to guide and govern the educational institutes like public school campuses, school districts etc. under the guidelines of AYP or the
Adequate Yearly Progress. If any school or educational institution in Texas, which is entitled to receive the Title I Part A funds, fails to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress Criteria for two successive years, it is deemed to follow the guidelines set by the AYP to improve the system of education.
Offering services on supplemental education, opportunities for school choices and above all taking corrective measures to enhance the administration of the institution or the organization fall under the corrective steps that should be taken by an institution to meet the demand of the AYP. A state or a district school campus is judged on the basis of
AYP standards, which include the following criterias:
- Reading or Language Arts
- Mathematics
- The Graduation Rates, which is applicable for high schools and districts. And the attendance Rates, which is applicable for elementary, middle or junior high schools.
The TEA is administered by the
Commisioner of Education, who in turn is appointed by the Texas Government. The post carries a huge responsibility, especially when it is required to assure the growth and development of the country by increasing the literacy rates. Consisting of a State board of Education, the Texas Education Agency has fifteen members in it.
