Abrantes, Portugal

Abrantes was made the political base by Duke of Wellington in the peninsula war which was fought from the period of 1808 to 1814. The city was set up as an Iberian settlement in the Celtic period. The city derived its name because of the rich reserves of gold found near the Tagus River. In the past coins, Roman mosaics and remains of a channel have been found.

Abrantes municipality is situated on the right side of the river Tagus at the crossroads of the railway of Madrid-Badajoz-Lisbon. It covers an area of 714.7 km².

Belvar in Abrantes is a beautiful town with a beautiful castle.The castle features a engraved 31st C. reredos and the "Sancho I's balcony. Wonderful views of the Tagaus valley can be had from here. Castelo was built in 1301 by King Dinis. This beautiful castle was ruined when an earthquake hit the city. Sardol is a wonderful tourist attraction in the northern part of the city. Church of the Misericórdia is also an attractive tourist place and features a Renaissance doorway with 16th century Portuguese paintings.
