Micronesia sports originally included only the traditional games on the island. With time, however, the traditional sports have lost out on their charm and popularity. Some of the major reasons behind this decreasing popularity may well be attributed to the introduction of sports from other nations. Micronesia's contacts, especially with Japan and United States, have resulted in the inclusion of some of the traditional sports activities of these nations into Micronesia.
Among other games that are played on the island, football and basketball are most popular with the Micronesian people. The games, the national teams and the entire set up is controlled and managed by their respective sport bodies or associations. The Federated States of Micronesia Basketball Association takes care of the sport of basketball. The Federated States of Micronesia Football Association is the governing body of the game of football in the country.
Micronesia sports is also has an important section by the name of Federated States of Micronesia National Olympic Committee, which was established in the year 1996. The Federated States of Micronesia National Olympic Committee got recognized in the year 1997, on the 6th of September. The Federated States of Micronesia made its first appearance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
