Jerash Jordan


Jerash is an ancient town and is one of the largest and best preserved Roman towns in the whole world. The town nestles in a quiet valley amid the Gilead Mountains. All ancient traditional Roman architectures including the paved and columned streets, huge public squares and plazas, fountains, baths, hilltop temples are so well preserved that it takes you 2000 years back to the ancient Roman Empire.

Location of Jerash
Jerash is located 48 kilometers north of Amman, the capital of Jordan. The town is surrounded by the mountains of Gilead. Jerash’s geographical feature varies from cold mountains to green and fertile valleys.

History of Jerash
The archeological evince proves that the settlement dates back to the Neolithic Age. Jerash had inhabited for more than 6500 years. In ancient times the town was a blend of Greco-Roman civilization and the ancient tradition of the Arab Orient. During the Romans the town was known as Gerasa. The Arabian inhabitants of the town changed the name into Jerash.

Art and Culture of Jerash
In July the Jerash from an ancient city turn into the liveliest and happening city in the whole world. The two-week long Jerash festival offers variety of events featuring singing, folklore dancing, poetry readings, ballet, orchestras, handicrafts, Shakespearean theatres, art shows and many more. Stall burst with handcrafted Bedouin rugs, jewelries, items made of wood, glass, metal and ceramics.

During this festival all the hotels and other accommodation places in Jerash bust with tourists from all over the world.
