Abadan Abadan is a city in the Khuzestan province and is located in the southwestern part of Iran. It lies on Abadan Island, on the Shatt al-Arab river 53 kilometers from the Persian Gulf. this Iranian city of Abadan is closely situated on the Iraqi-Iran border. It is the capital of Abadan County. According to the 2005 census, the population was estimated around 415,139.
Abadan was traditionally developed as a port city under the Abbasids' rule. It was founded by a holy man, Abbad. During this time, it was a commercial source of salt and woven mats. Since the 17th century, the island of Abadan was part of the lands of the Arab Ka'ab tribe, a section (Mohaysen) of which had its headquarters at Mohammara.
In 1939 the Abadan Institute of Technology was being established. The school has specialized in the field of engineering and petroleum chemistry and was meant to train staff for the refinery in town. Since then the name of the school has changed several times, but from 1989 it has been considered as a branch campus of the Petroleum University of Technology, centered in Tehran.
There is an international airport in Abadan that is represented by the IATA airport code ABD. Before the Iranian Revolution the Iranian city of Abadan was a popular tourist destination. Abadan had been the main place for Iranian Singers. While the whole country of Iran were mostly religious people. Abadanian people had a typical music genre that is known as Bandari.
