Billund is a Danish municipality in Ribe County located in the center of the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark. It covers an area of 155 square kilometers and has a total population of 8,697 as per the 2005 census.
Billund is a company town and home to the Lego Group headquarters. There is a Lego factory on the outskirts of the town which manufactures 90% of the products of the company. However, the production levels have fallen as a result of stiff competition from other companies and globalization. In 1968, the first Legoland theme park was built across the road of the company's headquarters. This park is one of the prime attractions in the whole of Denmark. This place draws about 1.5 million visitors every year.
Denmark's second busiest airport, Billund Airport is located in the region. It was built by the Lego Group in the year 1960. The proximity of the airport to the Lego theme park is the greatest advantage. Passenger and charter planes like Cirrus Airlines, North Flying, Atlantic Airways, and British Airways are some of the major airlines serving this airport. Many cargo airlines also stop at the Billund Airport like Fed Ex, Asiana Cargo, KLM Cargo, Nippon Cargo Airlines, UPS, Japan Airlines Cargo and Lufthansa Cargo.
Other popular tourist destinations of Billund are Givskud Zoo and Miniland which has miniature versions of well-known buildings of Lego. There are a large number of ruins which date back to the period of Vikings.
