Concepcion Map

Concepcion is an important city in the central Paraguay region. With a population of approximately 25,000,
it is the capital of the Concepcion Department and is an industrial center, as a number of important trades flourish in this region. Concepcion is located in the sparsely populated Gran Chaco region and can be approached from Brazil as well, to which it is connected by road.

Concepcion was founded by the Spanish Governor Agustin Fernado de Pinedo in 1773. Often referred to as Villa Concepcion, this Paraguayan town is located on the Paraguay river and serves as a free port to Brazil. Its location has made Concepcion in Paraguay a witness to many charged political confrontations, particularly during the Paraguayan Civil War, that took place in 1947. However, in the recent years, Concepcion of Paraguay has developed into a very important commercial center. Flour mills, sugar mills, tanneries and sugar refineries are some of the major industries of this city.

The greatest attraction of Concepcion is the journey to this town. It can be undertaken through a mind-blowing week long riverboat round trip from Asuncion, on the grand river Paraguay. Although it can be approached through air with the help of two-seater crop-duster planes, yet most people prefer to travel on four wheelers through the wild Gran Chaco region. This gives them a wonderful opportunity to witness the fascinating Paraguayan wildlife. Road travel is also possible, but most roads are not paved and become extremely difficult to drive on after heavy rains.
