Paraguay Sports






Sports in Paraguay represents one of the most important part of the country’s national culture. This interest is shown in a number of sports festivals that the country hosts. Paraguay has responsibly hosted international tournaments for years. Soccer or football was first introduced in Paraguay by a Dutchman, William Paats. Initially, the game remained confined to the elite class but quickly became popular among all classes.

A small tournament of Paraguay football took place at Plaza de Armas in Asuncion in 1900, which drew huge crowd. The success of the first match inspired William Paats to form the first football club of Paraguay. Thus Olimpia Football club, which was renamed Club Olimpia was formed in 1902. The number of football clubs escalated over the years. In 1906, the governing body of football in Paraguay, the Paraguayan Football Association was established. The Paraguayan Football Association joined CONMEBOL in 1921 and FIFA in 1925.


Now about 1600 teams of Paraguay Football are present in Paraguay who participate in the regional leagues of soccer in Paraguay. The major achievements of the Paraguay national team include:

The national team of Paraguay is the fourth-most successful football nation in South America after Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. At the club level, Olimpia Asuncion is the winner of eight international tournaments which includes three Copa Libertadores and one Intercontinental Cup.

The various football activities and associations in Paraguay are monitored by Conmebol. Conmebol is a South American Football Confederation established on July 9, 1916; it takes care of the football associations in the South American countries. The Conmebol or the CSF has its headquarters located in the region of Luque.

There are a total of ten members under the Conmebol association, namely, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador, Uruguay, Peru and Venezuela.

The strongest teams under the Conmebol are those of Brazil and Argentina. Most of the teams under the Conmebol have been quite successful in the FIFA World Cups. In fact, among the top five members of the FIFA World Rankings, two of the teams belong to the Conmebol confederation.

Though soccer is the dominant game in most of the Latin America countries, Basketball has managed to carve a niche for itself in the world of sports in Paraguay.

There is a Paraguay National Basketball Team as well as Paraguayan Basketball Federation in the country. The Paraguay National Basketball Team participates in several international basketball championships organized all over the world.

This team has made an achievement by securing high places in the South American Basketball Championship. They have also secured good places in FIBA World Championship.

The Paraguayan Basketball Federation governs and manages the Paraguay National Basketball Team.

Basketball in Paraguay is played by people of all ages, from under-16, under-18 to under-21 levels. All the players are well-trained and coached in such a way so that they can compete at the highest international levels. Several steps are taken by the Basketball Federation to upgrade the standard of basketball in the country.
