Designed by Kamrul Hasan, the national flag of Bangladesh consists of a red circle on a green background. The red circle has a radius of one fifth of the length of the Bangladesh flag.

The color green represents greenery of Bangladesh with its vivacity and youthfulness; also green is the traditional color of Islam. The red disc symbolizes the rising sun and the blood shed by the country men to achieve their independence.

The national flag was first hoisted on March 3, 1971 by ASM Abdur Rab, the then Vice President of Dhaka University Students’ Union, at the historic ‘Bat tala’ in Dhaka University campus.
