Mazeikiai city is located within the Mazeikiai district, close to the north western borders of Lithuania. It shares its borders with the small nation of Latvia. It is located within the ethnographic region of Zemaitija.
The Mazeikiai city is the chief city of the district. The city was established by the Duke of Zemaiciai Mazeikiai. From a small settlement with a minimal population, the town flourished with the beginning of the construction of a railway network. The prosperity of the town led to it been called 'the town of the future'. The population of the town increased by leaps and bounds. The population of the Mazeikiai city combined with that of the other regions within the district was the highest in Lithuania. Further progress was made by the city following the setting up of the oil refinery. It boosted the economy of the district and the city was now the eighth largest city in the country. The city boasts of a rich cultural life. There are a couple of cultural centers, a museum and a library. The city also has a well developed education system. The town with its cultural centers, its festivals, and the wonderful natural beauty of its surroundings, the forests and its indigenous culture attracts a large number of visitors each year.
