The
flag of Scotland was first hoisted in 1512.
It is one of the oldest flags of the world which is used till date. The
flag of Scotland features the cross of the Christian martyr St. Andrews, which is also known as the Saltire. The Saltire is placed on a blue background. The blue used in the
flag of Scotland can be of different shades. However, according to a recently passed official recommendation the opium shade of blue is to be used. Originally the
Scottish flag used the navy blue shade of blue. In 1385, the Scottish Parliament decreed that the soldiers should wear the Saltire as a distinguishing mark.
