On May 24, 1822, at the Battle of Pichincha, Ecuador achieved independence from Spain. The independent territories of Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia joined the Gran Colombia. On May 13, 1830, Ecuador dissolved its association with Gran Colombia and was proclaimed an independent nation.

Ecuador is a unitary presidential republic where the President is both the head of state and government. All literate persons in the age group (18-65) have the right to vote.

The economy of the Republic of Ecuador is heavily dependent on petroleum and the export of petroleum products. Food processing, tourism, textiles, wood products, and chemicals are the other major industries. Oil sector accounts for over sixty percent of the country's export earnings. Despite going through a great financial crisis in the late 1990s, the country has recovered its losses and is making rapid developments.

The major trade partners of Ecuador include the United States, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil. Spanish is the official language of Ecuador. Chuar-Shiwiar, Cofan, Colorado (Tsachila), Cuaiquer, and Cha'palaachi are some of the indigenous languages spoken in the country. Roman Catholicism is the pre-dominant religion in the Republic of Ecuador.

Ecuador is home to some of the most interesting places in the world. Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world is located in the country and is visited by many geography lovers. Some of the major tourist destinations include the Galápagos Islands, Esmeraldas, Quilotoa Loop, Vilcabamba, Yasuni National Park, Antisana Ecological Reserve, and the city of Cuenca.
