Al Hudaydah is the 4th biggest Yemenis city. It has an approximate population of 1 million. Another name of this city is Hodeida.
Being located on the Red Sea, it is treated as one of the most important ports in Yemen.
The city exports coffee, dates, cotton and hides. During the mid-19th century, the Turks established it as a seaport. However, unfortunately after a destructive fire blast of January, most of the buildings of the city were destroyed. However, with the assistance from Soviet Union, the city was reconstructed. It is also believed that during the 1970s and 1980s Hudaydah had been the site of a Soviet naval base.
The city is sited close to several historic towns. Zabid, which is considered to be a major Islamic town has and is home to over 100 old mosques or masjids, is one such town. Added to this, Al Hudaydah also houses an old university. The picturesque old city of Al-Hudaydah is bordered by a thick wall. Like some other Yemenis cities, Al Hudaydah is also known for its decorated multistory buildings.
It is also assumed that during 1970s several edifices were built following the modern style of architecture.
