About Oregon

The US State of Oregon is the 33rd state in the United States. On February 14, 1859, it was admitted to the Union. The Beaver State is the nickname of the State of Oregon.

Salem is Oregon’s capital. Portland is both the largest city and largest urban area. The state has no de jure official language. However, Pacific Northwest English is the de facto official language. In the US, Oregon is the 27th most populous state. 

Oregon Flag 

The current design of Oregon’s flag was adopted on April 15, 1925. Oregon has a two-sided flag. It is the only state flag in the US that has different designs on the flag’s either side.

Oregon’s official government emblem is the Seal of the State of Oregon. It was adopted on February 14, 1859. Harvey Gordon designed this emblem in 1857. The Oregon Constitution’s Article VI mandates the state seal. 

The Seal of the State of Oregon has a circular design. The seal features two circles: an outer ring and an inner circle.

Oregon History

The early archaeological evidence of the Paleo-Indians in the present Oregon region dates back to 13,200 years ago. Settlements of native American tribes have lived in this place since 8000 BC. Around 125 Native American tribes used to live here when the Europeans came. In the mid-16th century, the Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to visit the Oregon coast. Sir Francis Drake was the first European who spotted this place but didn’t set foot on the land. American explorer Captain Robert Gray named the adjoining river the Columbia River. 

Settlers started to throng this place after 1803. Great Britain and the United States of America agreed upon a joint occupancy of this land in 1818. The Oregon Trail was used in the 1840s by the settlers from the east to reach the Oregon Country. In 1846, this territory became a part of the USA through the Oregon Treaty. In 1848, the Oregon Territory was established. On February 14, 1859, Oregon attained statehood and was admitted to the Union as the thirty-third US state. 

With the discovery of gold in 1863, Nez Perce tribes were forcefully removed from the Nez Perce reservation. Led by Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce revolted against the settlers, and the Nez Perce War erupted in 1877. Once the US Army joined the battle, the Nez Perce tribes lost and were forced to move to Oklahoma’s Indian Territory.

Oregon Geography

Oregon is spread across a total area of 98,381 sq mi (254,806 sq km), where 95,997 sq mi (248,849 sq km) is land area and 2,384 sq mi (6,177 sq km) is water area. It is the 9th largest state in the United States in terms of size. 

Mount Hood is the highest elevation point at 11,239 feet (3,425.6 m). The state’s lowest point is the Pacific Ocean at sea level. Columbia River, Willamette River, Deschutes, and others are the major rivers in Oregon. The major lakes in Oregon are Crater Lake, Upper Klamath Lake, and many more. 

Oregon has six distinct landforms:

• Coast Range: It is situated along the Pacific Ocean from the northern part to the southern part of Oregon. • Willamette Lowlands: This is a narrow land strip along the Willamette River to the Coast Range’s east. The soil in Willamette Lowlands is rich. 
• Cascade Mountains: This landform has a rugged landscape, where you’ll find the state’s highest elevation point, Mount Hood. It is located in Willamette Lowlands’ east.
