Nebraska is the thirty-seventh state in the United States. This was admitted to the Union on March 1, 1867. The geographical area of Nebraska has three significant landforms:

• The Great Plains: Nebraska is part of the ten states that fall within the Great Plains, extending into Canada. The Great Plain is rich in minerals and oil and is, therefore, the center for mineral production. These plains cover an area of 1.3 million square kilometers. The Great Plains is a flat-surfaced elevated land sloping from the Rocky Mountains. The Great Plains are one of the four temperate grasslands of the world.

• The Bad Lands: The Toadstool Geologic Park is known as the badlands of Nebraska. This region is also known as the “desert of the Pine Ridge.” Covering 500 acres of land where phenomenal erosion has occurred, this region consists of domes, ravines, plateaus, tunnels, and arches. There is scanty vegetation in this area. The lack of water, rocky terrain, and extreme weather give this place its name.

• The Chimney Rock: On August 9, 1956, Chimney Rock was designated to be a National Heritage site. Currently, the Nebraska State Historical Society maintains this place. Nebraska History

Nebraska became part of the United States in1803. This land, known as Louisiana Territory, was purchased from France for an estimated USD 15 million.

When President James Madison signed a bill in 1812 to create the territory of Missouri, Nebraska was included. Two years from the end of the American Civil War, Nebraska became a part of the Union. It was the nation’s 37th state.

The word Nebraska comes from Sioux. It means “shallow water”. Way back in 8000 BCE, different types of people lived in Nebraska. During the 19th century, Native American peoples, mainly the Omaha, Oto, Pawnee, and Ponca, dwelt in eastern and central Nebraska.

The Brulé and Oglala Teton Sioux inhabited the west. However, Arapaho, Comanche, and Cheyenne also lived here. During the late 19th century, the Oto, Pawnee, and Ponca peoples were sent to the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). By 1878, groups of the Teton Sioux (Lakota) had been moved from northwestern Nebraska to the border of Dakota Territory (now South Dakota).

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, France and Spain claimed the area that would become Nebraska. However, in 1763 Spain won the title to the trans-Mississippi region, including Nebraska. 

But in the end, the Spanish failed to develop Native American trade. International politics spurred the region’s transfer, including Nebraska, to France in 1800. As part of the Louisiana Purchase, three years later, the United States wrested this area from France.
